Library and Database Resources

The Central Library of the University of Gdansk provides access to its public catalogue via the Internet - library members can order books by means of any computer connected to the network. Blind and visually impaired persons (and not only) can make use of the Virtual Library of Polish Literature (masterpieces of Polish literature from the Middle Ages to the XXth century in the form of digital documents in HTML format).

One of computers at the Languages and History Faculty of ug, in room 07, provides access to a "Lex" database; if required other databases will be made accessible. In the same room, students with sight difficulties can make use of a scanner and optical-character-recognition software.
Persons planning to scan or print in braille longer texts (a few hundred pages) are recommended to contact the computer operator in the computer lab Rafal Charlampowicz.

Computer Resources

At the ground floor of the Languages and History Faculty of the UG, in room 07 (entrance through room 08) two computer work stations designed for blind and visually impaired users are located:

1. A work station (Windows 98 with 64 MB RAM and 6,4 GB hard disk), equipped with a Combibraille 45 braille display, Microsoft Office 97 and Jaws for Windows 3.31 screen reading software.

2. A work station (Windows 2000 with 256 MB RAM and 37,26 GB hard disk), equipped with a Braille Lite 40 braille notetaker and display, Jaws for Windows 7.10, a Plustek OpticBook 3600 scanner, FineReader 6.0 optical character recognition software, and Microsoft Office 2000.

The latter work station is linked with an Index Everest braille embosser and it is also equipped with WinBraille 3.14 software - a powerful device for processing of braille texts.

On all computers in room 08 (the faculty's computer lab) Windows XP or Windows 98 operating system is installed, equipped with its own screen magnification application.

Blind and visually impaired individuals have priority in using the equipment prepared for them without any constraints. Room 08 is used for teaching purposes. In the summer semester of the current year tutorials are organised on Mondays from 9:45 to 11:15 and from 13:15 to 16:30, Tuesdays from 8:00 to 15:00, Wednesdays from 9:45 to 11:15, and on Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:15 and from 12:00 to 15:00.
Besides that the room is occasionally reserved for demonstration purposes on various days and at different hours.

The computer equipment for blind and visually impaired individuals located in room 07 is not used for teaching purposes and thus it is usually available for use.

Nevertheless, those who would like to use the computer equipment for the disabled installed in rooms no. 07 and 08 are advised to contact the computer operator in room 07 Rafal Charlampowicz or Tomasz Kawala, the administrator in room 08, phone: 552-95-71 (university local phone: 2571).
